Evolution of micro-pores in a third-generation single-crystal nickel-based superalloy during solution heat treatment at 1603 K (1330 oC) was investigated by X-ray computed tomography. 3D information including morphology, size, number, and volume fraction of
micro-pores formed during solidification (S-pores) and solution (H-pores) was analyzed. The growth behaviors of both S-pores and H-pores can be related to the vacancy formation and diffusion during heat treatment.

Secondary electron micrograph and corresponding X-ray micrograph of sample corroded for 80 h. The white needle-like phase enriches Ta and S, while the dark dot-like phase enriches Cr and S.

Hot corrosion behavior of a Ni-base single crystal superalloy with low Cr, Ti and high Ta contents in molten sodium sulphate (Na2SO4) at 900 oC in static air was investigated using the “deposit recoat” method. The corrosion scale was composed of an outer NiO layer, an inner Al2O3-dominant oxide network layer and a (CrSx(1.0002) sulphide layer. Ta was found to exhibit a beneficial effect by promoting the formation of NaTaO3 and TaS2, and therefore inhibiting the formation of liquid phases Na2MoO4 and Ni-sulphides.
