In 1999, he began his doctoral work in the Institute of Genetics & Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He played a leading role in the Human Genome Project in China to analyze sequences and data. As a visiting scholar, he did research on positional cloning of human disease genes in the Panum Medical School, Copenhagen University, Denmark, for a period of time.
