Research Profile

     HOU Jianguo, President of University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), is an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Academician of the Third World Academy of Science. 
     
     Born in 1959, a native of Fuqing, Fujian Province, Hou studied at USTC from 1978 to 1989, and graduated with doctoral degree in Condensed Matter Physics. From 1988 to 1995, He had been engaged in scientific research at the Laboratory of Electron Microscopy of the Institute of Crystallography, USSR Academy of Sciences, the Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the University of California, Berkeley, U.S., and the Department of Chemistry, Oregon State University, U.S.. In 1995, he was promoted as full professor at USTC and has served as Director of the State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis, CAS, and Director of the Physical and Chemical Science Center, USTC. In 2000, Hou was appointed as Vice President of USTC. In 2003, Hou was elected Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). In August 2004, He served as Executive Deputy Director of the Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Microscale. In November 2004, Hou was elected Academician of the Third World Academy of Sciences. In September 2005, he was appointed Executive Vice President of USTC. Since 2008, he has been serving as President of USTC.
     
     Professor Hou’s research has been focused on physical chemistry. He has made a series of achievements, particularly in the research on single-molecule characteristics and manipulation through the use of high-resolution scanning tunneling microscope, and has yielded important contributions to single-molecule research in the field of physical chemistry both theoretically and experimentally. Professor Hou has had a total of more than 100 papers published to date in influential academic journals like Nature, Science, J. of Amer. Chem. Soc., Phys. Rev. lett., etc., making him one with international reputation and influence.
     
     Prof. Hou’s awards and honors include the Award of the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars of China, the first prizes of the CAS Natural Science Award and the Anhui Provincial Natural Science Award, the second prize of the State-level Natural Science Award, the “Outstanding Young Scholar Award” of the “Qiu Shi Science & Technologies Foundation” of Hong Kong, the grand prize of the Chinese Association for Instrumental Analysis (CAIA) Award, the Achievement in Asia Award of Overseas Chinese Physics Association (OCPA), the prize of Ho Leung Ho Lee Science and Technology Progress Award, the prize of Tan Kah Kee Science Award, the award of the title of “National Young & Middle-Aged Expert with Outstanding Contribution”, the CAS Outstanding Supervisor Award, as well as the National Award for Outstanding Overseas Student Returnees.
     
     Prof. Hou’s academic service includes Member of Executive Council of the International Union for Vacuum Science, Honorary Member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, Member of the Seventh Council of China Association for Science and Technology, President of the Chinese Vacuum Society, Member of Executive Council of Chinese Physical Society (CPS), Member of Council of Chinese Materials Research Society (CMRS), Vice Chairman of the Chinese Surface Physics Society, Member of Editorial Board of International Journal of Nanotechnology (Inderscience Pub.), Member of Editorial Board of Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (American Scientific Pub.), Managing Editor of International Journal of Nanoscience (World Scientific Pub.), Member of Editorial Board of Chinese Journal of Chemical Physics, Managing Editor of Science in China, Member of Editorial Board of Chinese Journal of Chemical Physics, Member of Editorial Board of Progress in Surface Science, Member of Peer Review Colleges of Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), UK, Member of China National Accreditation Board for Laboratories (CNAL), Titular Member of the IUPAC Physical and Biophysical Chemistry Division Committee, Member of the Academic Committee for National Center for Nanoscience and Technology (NCNST) of China and Vice Chairman of the Special Committee on Nanotechnology, Member of the National Council for Science and Technology under the Ministry of Education, as well as program committee member of a series of international academic conferences.

     Prof. Hou’s research interests are in Synthesis and characterization of nanomaterials and nanostructures,Physical and chemical properties of single molecules and their assemblies,Study of nanomaterials and nanostructures with scanning probes (STM, AFM)and Quantum phenomena in confined structures like nano-particles and single molecules.
