Professor Liu received his PhD from Rice University in January 2009. He did his postdoctoral research at the Center for Solar-Terrestrial Research of New Jersey Institute of Technology from September 2008 to June 2011, and was promoted to Research Professor in July 2011. He joined USTC at the end of 2011 as a full professor, funded by the prestigious Thousand Young Talents Program of China. His research is focused on the dynamic processes in the solar atmosphere that lead up to explosive release of free magnetic energy accumulated in the solar corona, known as solar storms, which have significant impact on the near Earth environment. He has published 57 refereed journals, which have been cited over 1000 times.
