Research Profile

Yannan CHU, PhD, professor, director, Laboratory of Medical Optical and Mass Spectrometry, Center of Medical Physics and Technology, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The interesting fields mainly include reaction dynamics of photon, electron, ion and molecule, new technique development in mass spectrometry, ion mobility spectrometry and optical spectrum, as well as their applications in medicine,environment and public safety. 

The instruments or platforms in Dr. Chu's laboratory include: homemade proton transfer reaction mass spectrometer (PTR-MS:PTR-QMS and PTR-TOFMS), breath realtime and online test mass spectrometer, non-radioactive ion mobility spectrometer, ion mobility - mass spectrometry experimental apparatus and optical spectral detection device for heavy metal, as well as standard desktop and handheld ion mobility spectrometry detectors, gas / liquid chromatography - triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS), liquid chromatography - time of flight mass spectrometer / quadrupole - time of flight mass spectrometer (LC-TOF-MS and LC-q-TOF-MS), calorimeter, etc.

In recent years, Dr. Chu undertook the projects supported by the national natural science foundation of China,  national high technology research and development program 863, national science and technology program, the CAS knowledge innovation program, CAS instrument development program, Anhui province outstanding youth fund, cooperation between Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society, China - Slovak governmental science and technology cooperation and so on.

Dr. Chu ever worked as a guest scientist at Innsbruck University of Austria to study the electron impact ionization/attachment to molecules and clusters of atmospheric relevance. He visited Keele University of England for the online analysis of trace volatile organic compounds via chemical ionization mass spectrometry. Dr. Chu had over 100 papers published in peer-reviewed scientific journals and won the Natural Scientific Award of Chinese Academy of Science in 1998.
