Research Profile

Born in September 1960, and a native of Tongcheng, Anhui Province, Liu Wandong entered the Department of Modern Physics, University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) in March 1978 and received his Ph.D. degree in 1988. Liu joined the faculty of USTC in 1988. From 1991 to 1993, he conducted his postdoctoral study and research at the Department of Controlled Fusion Research at the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA). From 1996 to 1997, he was a visiting scholar at the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). Being a professor and doctoral supervisor of physics at USTC, Liu serves as Executive Dean of the School of Physical Sciences and Deputy Director of the Key Laboratory of Basic Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
Prof. Liu has long been engaged in experimental research on fusion plasma physics, non-neutral plasma physics, and nonlinear plasma physics. His research involves wave-plasma interaction, micro-turbulence and anomalous transport in magnetized plasma, properties of dense non-neutral electron plasmas, solid pellet ablation in plasmas, nonlinear kinetic behaviors in plasma systems, development of laser-plasma interaction and microwave diagnostic technology, etc.
In recent years, the main research projects Prof. Liu has undertaken include seven national projects of ITER, projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and projects supported by the National Defense “973” Program, as well as seven projects at the CAS or ministerial level, with a total project funding of nearly 60 million RMB. Prof. Liu has published 92 research papers in recently years, 42 of which were indexed by SCI/EI. Under his supervisionEight students graduated with doctoral degree, and eight students graduated with master's degree.
